Detailed Ride Description:
Our ride begins at the day lodge at 7080' at the Spooner Lake day use area in the beautiful Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park. The flat North Canyon road runs past the old sheperds hut, then gives way to rolling uphill terrain through beautiful aspen groves that thrive in the Carson Range on the east side of Lake Tahoe. The last half mile of climbing past Snow Valley is where you become friendly with that shiny little granny gear on your cool Specialized mountain bike. You only get to climb 1100 feet in elevation, so take your time and savor these climbs as they are the only ones you'll to do all day. We don't want you to feel slighted in your Tahoe experience. At the summit, a quick break under the whispering lodgepole pines quickly drys the sweat and refreshes the soul.
Next a short descent leads to the peaceful, pristine Marlette Lake where in June and early July the huge Lahontan Cutthroat trout are spawning at the fish ladders. In the fall the colors at Marlette Lake are a sight to behold. A mile and a half of riding on the dirt road along the shore of Marlette Lake leads to the trail side lunch spot, overlooking beautiful Marlette Lake.
After lunch and refreshments, it is on to the incredible Flume Trail. This trail is nearly flat, dropping only 40 feet a mile and is spectacular in its setting. 1600 feet above the east shore of Lake Tahoe and only a half mile away from the shoreline in places, it is truly one of the premier trails in the world. Don't worry, we will stop often to point out several landmarks and let you take a few pictures.
At the end of the Flume Trail is a three mile, 1500 foot decent down to the shuttle van which will whisk you away back scenic Highway 28 to the Spooner Lake Outdoor Company's day lodge.
This is a moderately difficult ride at 7000 to 8000 feet in elevation. There is over 1000 feet of climbing and 4.5 miles of single track. The Flume Trail itself traverses above several steep drop offs, so those afraid of heights be forewarned. Most of the spectacular vistas require traversing steep terrain.
